Boyle School student Don Cardinal presented with Honouring Spirit: Indigenous Student Award
Don Cardinal, a Grade 12 student at Boyle School, was one of 12 students from across Alberta presented with an Honouring Spirit: Indigenous Student Award at a ceremony at the Queen Elizabeth II Building in Edmonton on Monday, April 14, 2025.
The Honouring Spirit: Indigenous Student Awards, sponsored by the Alberta School Boards Association (ASBA), Keyera and Alberta Education, recognize First Nations, Métis and Inuit students who model strength and commitment in the pursuit of their personal education path; and embrace their own gifts, strengths and potential while celebrating the ways of their people. Students are nominated by members of their education communities, based on exemplary leadership, courage and commitment to their cultures and educational paths.
Don was nominated for the Honouring Spirit: Indigenous Student Award by Boyle School Indigenous Education Lead Cary Marshall. “I have had the privilege of watching him grow into a strong, resilient, and inspiring young man for the last 10 years, who not only works hard to achieve his own goals but also uplifts those around him,” she wrote.
“Don has faced challenges that would have made many others give up, yet he continues to push forward with incredible strength and determination. He has never let these obstacles define him; instead, he has used them as fuel to keep going, proving time and time again that he is capable of great things.
“One of the most remarkable things about Don is his deep connection to his culture and heritage,” she continued. “He doesn't just embrace his identity — he shares it, celebrates it, and helps others find pride in their own roots. Sharing his knowledge with students, he is a role model for cultural strength and resilience. His enthusiasm for learning and teaching others about his traditions is truly inspiring.”
“I cannot think of anyone more deserving of this award,” Ms. Marshall concluded. “Don Cardinal is not just a student who works hard — he is a young leader, a cultural ambassador, and a person who will no doubt continue to inspire others for years to come. It has been an honor to watch him grow, and I have no doubt that he will continue to make his family, his community, and his ancestors proud.”
“Don exemplifies growth, resilience and commitment to his education and cultural heritage,” his award presentation stated. “He understands the importance of regular attendance and hard work, and was recently accepted to Lakeland College in Vermilion to pursue the field of welding. Don's contributions to the Indigenous Studies program, his involvement in planning Indigenous celebrations for graduation, and volunteering at the local food bank reflects his passion for promoting cultural awareness and inclusion, along with his commitment to community service.”
The 12 students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 who received the Honouring Spirit: Indigenous Student Award were selected from over 300 nominees. Each received an award certificate and congratulatory letter; a unique hand-crafted Star Blanket, and a $2,500 scholarship sponsored by Keyera.
“It is a privilege to recognize these 12 outstanding Indigenous students from across Alberta,” ASBA President Marilyn Denis said. “Each of these young leaders exemplifies strength and resilience in their educational journeys, while embracing the rich traditions and teachings of their cultures. We celebrate their accomplishments and the bright futures ahead of them. On behalf of Alberta’s locally-elected school boards, I extend heartfelt congratulations to each recipient and their families.”
