Indigenous Youth Mentorship Program

We are thrilled to share the exciting progress of the Ever Active Schools - Indigenous Youth Mentorship Program (IYMP), implemented this year at Vilna School. Co-developed by Indigenous youth, educators, and researchers, IYMP is designed to promote well-being, resilience, and positive mental health, aligning with Miyo-Pimâtisiwin teachings (“living in a good way”). The program is grounded in the theoretical frameworks of Indigenous scholars Drs. Brokenleg (Circle of Courage) and Kirkness (The Four R’s).

On October 23-25, Vilna School staff attended a “Champion” training, equipping them with the tools and knowledge needed to support the program. Following this, from November 27-29, our high school students participated in a three-day intensive mentorship training in the beautiful setting of Kananaskis. This enriching experience allowed them to deepen their understanding of the program’s objectives and develop new skills to enhance their mentorship roles.

Our high school mentors have returned with fresh perspectives and an expanded repertoire of engaging activities to share with Grade 1-6 students. These activities include a variety of traditional and modern games that not only encourage physical activity but also foster cultural pride and meaningful connections. The mentorship sessions will officially begin in January and continue consistently until the end of the school year, providing a structured and impactful program for all participants.

In addition to leading games and activities, our high school mentors will also take on the responsibility of preparing healthy snacks for the younger students. This hands-on experience emphasizes the importance of nutrition while helping the mentors develop practical skills in planning and preparing balanced meals.

We are incredibly proud of our high school mentors and the positive impact they are making in the lives of younger students. This program beautifully exemplifies how mentorship, cultural education, and educators can come together to create meaningful and lasting change. We eagerly anticipate seeing the IYMP continue to thrive, inspiring and benefiting all members of our school community.

Together, we are living and learning in a good way. Miyo-Pimâtisiwin!
